Misconceptions And Facts About Hypnosis

24 July 2011 150 views No Comment

Myths have always chased hypnosis and its healing arm, hypnotherapy. People either believe them to be falling in the domain of the occult, or don’t regard them to be genuine scientific endeavours. Provided below are some common misconceptions prevalent about hypnosis, and the real truth behind them.

Hypnosis has nothing to do with black magic of any kind. Psychology and the other sciences have an important role to play in the hypnotic method, and it is very simple to imbibe and practice. The authenticity of hypnosis is doubted even by individuals who have watched it casting its spell on subjects. They say that hypnotised people allow practitioners to be successful in their art by not exhibiting enough will power to block the influence of their words. But nothing could be more distant from the truth. Even mentally strong people can fall under the spell of an expert hypnosis practitioner.

Another myth is that hypnosis is an alternate state of consciousness, which again is a serious misconception. A hypnotized person is fully alert of what is going on in his surroundings. That individual is just in a calm state where the attention spans are very high and the person can receive new inputs easily.

Some scientists have found that hypnosis succeeds on just 5% of the world’s population, and this is another common myth. The researchers are somewhat true in their own way, because they attempted hypnotising their subjects by the same hypnosis method without acknowledging individual differences in nature and disposition. One hypnosis procedure for all is not a viable solution as different people fall under different character types, and hence are responsive to different techniques.

People also tend to equate hypnosis to meditation. But while hypnosis is an interaction technique, meditation is all about a mental state and generally has no communication involved in the process. The state of trance and the state of hypnosis are entirely different from each other too. Just like meditation, trance is a mental state, and it is not linked with communication in any manner, whereas the very basis of the hypnosis method is communication.

It is commonly believed that hypnosis training or hypnotherapy cannot bring transformations in appearance or in behavioural patterns of a person. Hypnosis definitely cannot transform the body in abnormal ways. However, it can propel the body to a healthy shape through behavioural transformations like eating less, and giving up smoking and other addictive habits by ensuring a high level of motivation in an individual.

Hypnosis, and particularly hypnotherapy, can have a vital role to play in the well-being of an individual, and not trying them out just because of some false notions is a missed opportunity.
